This new collection of paper prints was created in early 2020 after a studio exchange to rural Mexico in January 2020. The majority of these prints are drypoint etchings using raw round copper plates I found in Mexico. The raw copper creates beautiful natural marks in the print giving each piece a depth and texture. The imagery in many of these prints draws on the differences or similarities between rural Mexico and the Yorkshire Dales where I live. This is the first time I have worked with paper I a long time after working predominantly with wood. It was so interesting to see how all that time printing on wood has informed my making and the way I print.
I have developed a simple and unique way to frame these prints using strips of wood sandwiched together. With no glass separating the viewer from the paper and inky goodness these frames allow an immediacy with the work. The beautiful deckled edge of the high quality paper is there to be enjoyed rather than hidden in a frame. The work also looks brilliant in the home giving a modern and contemporary alternative to a traditional frame.
